The Eastern White Pine (Pinus strobus) is a large, fast-growing evergreen known for its soft, blue-green needles in bundles of five, graceful layered branches on mature trees, and historically significant straight-grained, lightweight wood used for timber and ship masts, offering beauty as a landscape tree, windbreak, or Christmas tree, though it's sensitive to air pollution, alkaline soils, and pests like the white pine weevil. 

Key Characteristics

  • Needles: Soft, flexible, 3-5 inches long, in bundles of five (a key identifier).
  • Shape: Pyramidal when young, developing a broad, irregular, flattened crown with whorled branches as it ages.
  • Bark: Smooth gray-green on young trees, becoming thick, dark gray, and furrowed with age.
  • Size: Can reach 80-100 feet tall in cultivation, with historical specimens exceeding 200 feet.
  • Cones: 6-8 inches long, cylindrical, brown. 

Habitat & Growing Conditions

  • Native Range: Northeastern U.S. and Canada, Great Lakes region.
  • Soil: Prefers moist, well-drained, fertile, sandy loams; intolerant of compacted clay, alkaline soils, and salt.
  • Sun: Full sun.
  • Climate: Cool, humid climates.
