#7 Gallon

The Tamukeyama Japanese Maple (Acer pal, atum 'Tamukeyama')is a highly prized, 300-year-old cultivar known for its cascading, umbrella-like, weeping habit and superior heat tolerance. It features finely dissected, deep burgundy-red leaves that maintain color well, even in summer, before turning brilliant scarlet in fall. Typically maturing at 4–8 feet tall and wide, it is ideal for small landscapes or containers.

Key Characteristics and Care:

  • Appearance: A deciduous, weeping, laceleaf Japanese maple with a delicate, fine-textured, mounding form.
  • Coloration: Foliage emerges bright red-crimson in spring, matures to deep burgundy in summer, and turns bright, fiery red in autumn.
  • Growth Rate & Size: Moderate grower, reaching 4-7 feet tall with a 6-10 foot spread at maturity.
  • Sun/Shade: Tolerates full sun, especially in cooler climates, but thrives in partial shade or afternoon shade in hotter, southern regions to prevent leaf scorch.
  • Hardiness Zones: Generally hardy in zones 5-8.
  • Maintenance: Low-maintenance. Requires well-drained, acidic soil and consistent moisture, especially in summer. Prune only in summer after leaves develop to prevent sap bleeding.
  • Why It Stands Out: It is more heat-tolerant and tends to leaf out later than many other red laceleaf varieties, helping it avoid damage from late spring frosts.

The tree is excellent as a specimen, in containers, or as a focal point near water features.
