The Sugar Tyme® Crabapple (Malus 'Sutyzam') is a popular, disease-resistant ornamental tree known for its four-season interest, featuring fragrant white spring blooms, crisp green foliage, and persistent bright red fruit. It has an upright, oval form, typically growing 15–20 feet tall and 10–15 feet wide.

Key Features and Characteristics

  • Flowers & Foliage: In mid-spring, pale pink buds open into fragrant, white flowers. The foliage is a healthy, glossy dark green that turns yellow in autumn.
  • Fruit: Produces 1/2-inch glossy red crabapples that last through winter, providing food for birds and lasting color.
  • Size & Shape: Grows 14–20 feet tall and 10–15 feet wide with an upright, spreading, oval, or rounded habit, making it ideal for small spaces, urban landscapes, and street plantings.
  • Disease Resistance: Highly resistant to diseases like apple scab and cedar-apple rust.

Care and Growing Conditions

  • Light: Requires full sun (6–8 hours daily) for optimal blooming.
  • Soil: Adapts to a wide range of soils, including clay, but prefers well-drained, acidic loam.
  • Water: Needs regular watering during the first year, but is fairly drought-resistant once established.
  • Maintenance: Low-maintenance; pruning is best done in late winter.
  • Hardiness Zone: Hardy in USDA Zones 4-8.

Uses
The Sugar Tyme Crabapple is excellent as a specimen tree, for planting in small groups, or in tight spaces like under power lines. It provides vibrant, long-lasting color from spring flowers through winter berries.
