The Stellar Pink Dogwood (Cornus x 'Rutgan') is a popular hybrid flowering tree known for its disease resistance and stunning, large, soft pink spring "flowers" (bracts) that appear before its lush green leaves, offering good fall color and a manageable size (20-25 ft tall) for landscapes, preferring well-drained, acidic soil and partial sun for best performance.

Key Characteristics

  • Flowers: Large, overlapping, shell-pink bracts in late spring, lasting several weeks.
  • Foliage: Dark green in summer, turning deep purple-red in fall.
  • Size: Grows to about 20-25 feet tall and wide, with an upright, spreading habit.
  • Growth Rate: Moderate, about 1-2 feet per year under good conditions.
  • Disease Resistance: Highly resistant to anthracnose, powdery mildew, and borers.
  • Sterile: Produces little to no fruit, avoiding mess.

Growing Conditions

  • Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade, with afternoon shade being ideal.
  • Soil: Prefers medium moisture, well-drained, acidic soil (pH 5.5-6.5).
  • Watering: Keep consistently moist, especially when establishing, then water deeply and infrequently.
  • Mulch: Apply mulch to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.

    Uses in the Landscape

    • Excellent specimen tree for residential gardens, patios, or terraces.
    • Adds mid-level interest beneath taller trees or in woodland settings.
    • Can be used in groupings or even as a street tree where appropriate.
