#7 Gallon Pot

The Shademaster Honeylocust (Gleditsia triacanthos'Shademaster') is a fast-growing, deciduous tree known for its, thornless, seedless, and vase-shaped structure, reaching 50–70 feet in height. It features fine, fern-like foliage that creates dappled, filtered shade, allowing grass to grow underneath.

Key Characteristics and Benefits

  • Appearance: Upright, spreading canopy with dark green foliage turning yellow in fall.
  • Low Maintenance: Virtually no, or very few, seed pods or thorns, making it ideal for urban landscapes.
  • Durability: Highly adaptable, tolerant of drought, compacted soils, air pollution, and salt.
  • Growth Rate: Fast grower, increasing in size by up to 36 inches per year.
  • Hardiness Zones: Thrives in USDA Zones 5-8.

Uses and Considerations

  • Best Uses: Excellent for street-side planting, urban parks, and as a lawn tree due to its airy, dappled shade.
  • Cleanup: Small, compound leaves fall in autumn and usually vanish into the grass, reducing raking.
  • Spacing: Requires full sun, ideally 6–8 hours per day.
  • Pruning: Best pruned in late winter.
