#1 Gallon

Meadow sage (Salvia pratensis or S. nemorosa) is a hardy, upright, clump-forming perennial (zones 4–9) known for intense purple, blue, pink, or white flower spikes. Thriving in full sun and well-drained soil, it is drought-tolerant, deer-resistant, and pollinator-friendly. Key maintenance includes shearing back to promote repeat blooming.

Key Care and Characteristics

  • Light: Full sun is required for best performance.
  • Soil: Tolerates a wide range of soils but prefers well-drained, even rocky or sandy soil.
  • Water: Drought-tolerant once established, but needs regular water during the first growing season.
  • Maintenance: Cut back, or shear, the plant after the first bloom in late spring to encourage reblooming in summer and autumn.
  • Hardiness: Extremely hardy, with some varieties surviving down to -30∘F
  • Usage: Ideal for cottage gardens, border plantings, and, due to its size, container gardening.
