The Rosy Glow Barberry (Berberis thunbergii 'Rose Glow') is a popular, hardy, deciduous shrub known for its vibrant, ever-changing foliage, offering rose-pink to burgundy hues with white marbling, especially in sun, forming a dense, thorny, rounded plant great for hedges, borders, or accent groupings, prized for its low maintenance, drought tolerance, and deer resistance, with tiny yellow flowers in spring and red berries in fall/winter.

Key Characteristics:

  • Foliage: New growth emerges pink and white marbled, maturing to deep reddish-purple or burgundy, providing color all season. Full sun enhances color; shade dulls it.
  • Size: Grows to about 4-6 feet tall and wide, with a dense, rounded, multi-stemmed habit.
  • Flowers & Fruit: Small, inconspicuous yellow flowers appear in spring, followed by red berries that birds enjoy and often persist into winter.
  • Texture: Offers a fine texture that contrasts well with other landscape plants.

Uses in the Landscape:

  • Excellent for hedges, borders, foundation plantings, or as a colorful accent.
  • Its thorny branches make it an effective barrier plant.
  • Combines well with drought-tolerant plants like sedums, ornamental grasses, and junipers.

Growing Conditions:

  • Sun: Prefers full sun for best color, but tolerates partial shade.
  • Soil: Adaptable to various soil types but needs well-drained conditions (no standing water).
  • Water: Drought-tolerant once established; water regularly when young and during extreme drought.

Care & Maintenance:

  • Pruning: Generally low maintenance; can be left natural or pruned in winter for a manicured look.
  • Pests/Diseases: Few issues, though powdery mildew can occur.
  • Wildlife: Deer resistant due to thorns; berries attract birds.

Considerations:

  • Can spread slowly via creeping roots or self-seeding.
  • Tolerates urban pollution and road salt well.
