Latham Red Raspberry (Rubus 'Latham') is a highly popular, cold-hardy (Zones 3-8), summer-bearing, and self-pollinating variety known for producing large, firm, sweet red fruit in mid-July. These vigorous, 4–5 ft tall shrubs are ideal for northern gardens, offering high disease resistance, though they should be kept away from black raspberries to prevent virus transmission.

  • Fruit: Large, 1-inch diameter, deep-red, firm berries with excellent, full flavor, ideal for eating fresh, canning, or freezing.
  • Harvest Time: Mid-summer (late June to early July).
  • Hardiness: Zones 3–8, thriving in cold climates.
  • Growth Rate: Fast; upright, 4–5 ft canes that require pruning.
  • Light: Full sun to partial shade.
  • Soil: Requires acidic, well-drained, nutrient-rich soil.
  • Planting: Space plants 3 feet apart in rows 3–4 feet apart.
  • Maintenance: Consistently water (especially during fruiting), mulch to conserve moisture, and cut back canes in winter. 

     

Planting and Pruning Tips

  • Pruning: Remove old, dead canes after fruiting to encourage new growth.
  • Spacing: Plant 1 inch deep in heavy soils, 2 inches in sandy soils.
  • Spacing for Yield: 20 to 25 plants are recommended for a family of 5.
  • Disease Resistance: Highly resistant, but watch for aphids and viral diseases.
