#7 Gallon

The 'Red Dragon' Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum 'Red Dragon') is a slow-growing, deciduous, dwarf tree known for its finely dissected, lace-like burgundy foliage and cascading habit. It matures to a height of 4–8 ft (occasionally up to 10–12 ft) with a 6–8 ft spread, making it ideal for, small gardens, containers, and borders. It features bright scarlet spring leaves that deepen to dark red-purple in summer and turn fiery crimson in fall.

Key Characteristics and Care

  • Color Retention: Unlike other red laceleaf varieties, 'Red Dragon' keeps its dark, rich color through the summer, even in warm climates.
  • Light Requirements: Thrives in partial shade, but shows better sun tolerance than many other red dissectum varieties.
  • Hardiness: Generally hardy in USDA Zones 5-8.
  • Watering: Requires consistent moisture, particularly if grown in containers, say this article from The Spruce.
  • Soil: Prefers well-drained, slightly acidic, and organically rich soil.
  • Maintenance: Low-maintenance; pruning is rarely needed but should be done in summer to avoid sap bleeding.

This plant is excellent for dramatic color in small landscape spaces.
