The Prairifire Crabapple (Malus 'Prairifire') is a highly disease-resistant, deciduous tree popular for its year-round color, featuring reddish-purple foliage, deep pink-red spring blooms, and persistent maroon fruits. It grows in a rounded, 15–20 foot tall/wide canopy, making it ideal for small landscapes,, and is hardy in Zones 3–8. 

Key Characteristics & Overview

  • Flowers: Showy, fragrant magenta-pink to red flowers bloom in mid-spring.
  • Foliage: Leaves emerge glossy purplish-maroon in spring, turn dark green with red veins in summer, and shift to orange-bronze in autumn.
  • Fruit: Produces small, persistent 1/2" dark purple-red fruits that last into winter, attracting birds.
  • Disease Resistance: Highly resistant to common crabapple diseases, including apple scab, rust, powdery mildew, and fire blight.
  • Growth: Moderate growth rate to a mature height and spread of 15–20 feet. 

Care and Cultivation

  • Light: Requires full sun (6–8+ hours daily) for best flowering and disease resistance.
  • Soil: Adaptable to various soil types but prefers well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil.
  • Watering: Requires moderate, regular water; somewhat drought-tolerant once established.
  • Pruning: Best pruned in late winter or early spring to maintain shape. 

Landscape Uses
Due to its small stature and high ornamental value, it is excellent for use as a specimen tree, in small groups, for planting under utility lines, or for creating colorful, privacy-screening rows.
