#1 Gallon

Polemonium, commonly known as Jacob's Ladder or Greek Valerian, is a genus of hardy, herbaceous perennials (Zones 3-9) prized for their pinnately compound, ladder-like foliage and clusters of blue, purple, or white bell-shaped flowers in spring/summer. They thrive in partial shade and moist, well-drained soil, making them ideal for woodland gardens, with most species growing 12-36 inches tall.

Key Characteristics & Overview

  • Foliage: Leaves are pinnately compound with leaflets arranged like rungs on a ladder, often forming neat, mounded, or creeping clumps.
  • Flowers: Features loose clusters of nodding, 5-petaled, often scented blue-violet or white flowers.
  • Light/Soil: Prefers partial shade, though can tolerate full sun in cooler regions if soil remains consistently moist. Prefers rich, moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil.
  • Maintenance: Low maintenance, generally deer-resistant. Deadheading after blooming may encourage a second flush of foliage or flowers.
