#1.5 Gallon

Pineberries are small, white-fleshed, pink-tinted strawberries with red seeds, featuring a unique, sweet-tart flavor with strong notes of pineapple, pear, and apricot. Native to South America, they are a natural hybrid (not GMO) of Fragaria chiloensis and Fragaria virginiana. They are generally grown in USDA zones 5-8 and thrive in full sun, often requiring a nearby red strawberry plant for optimal pollination and yield.

Key Features and Growing Information:

  • Taste and Appearance: They have a softer, pear-like texture and taste like a blend of strawberry and pineapple. When ripe, they turn from green to white with a slight pink blush.
  • Growing: They are everbearing, meaning they produce fruit throughout the season. They prefer well-drained soil and can be grown in containers or in the ground.
  • Harvesting: They do not ripen further after being picked, so they should be harvested only when they have a slight blush.
  • Usage: They are used similarly to red strawberries in salads, desserts, or eaten raw.

Why They Are Popular:

  • Bird Deterrent: Because they are white when ripe, birds often overlook them, unlike red strawberries.
  • Unique Flavor/Color: Their distinct, sweet flavor and unique, pale appearance make them a popular novelty item.
