It typically grows 40–50 feet tall with a rounded shape, performing well in USDA Zones 5–9.

Key Features and Characteristics:

  • Fall Color: Known for spectacular, intense red, and long-lasting foliage, often holding leaves later than other red maples.
  • Appearance: Features shiny green leaves during summer and reddish-tinged twigs. It produces small, red, showy flowers in early spring.
  • Growth Rate & Size: Moderate to fast-growing (13–24” or more per year), reaching 40-50 feet in height and 30-40 feet in width.
  • Uses: Excellent shade tree, street tree, or specimen tree, and is well-suited for urban environments and parking lot buffer strips.
  • Hardiness: Adaptable to a wide range of soil types and tolerant of pollution.

Care and Maintenance:

  • Sunlight: Thrives in full sun to partial shade.
  • Watering: Requires consistent, moderate moisture, especially during dry periods, but can handle temporary flooding.
  • Soil: Prefers slightly acidic, well-drained soil.
  • Problems: Can be susceptible to aphids, scale, and iron chlorosis in high pH soils, along with potential bark splits from strong sun. Surface roots can occasionally cause sidewalk issues.
