Key Characteristics and Features:

  • Appearance: Features stiff, vertical, olive-green to blue-green foliage that turns golden-yellow in autumn.
  • Flowers/Seed Heads: Produces airy, pinkish-yellow, or brick-red, panicle-style flowers in late summer, which turn into seed heads that last through winter.
  • Growth Habit: Extremely upright and compact, forming thick clumps that remain sturdy, even under snow, making them ideal for screens and vertical accents.
  • Hardiness & Maintenance: Thrives in USDA Zones 4–9. It is drought-tolerant, deer-resistant, and adaptable to various soil types, including clay and wet soils.
  • Usage: Excellent for mass plantings, prairie-style gardens, urban, and native plant gardens.

  • Water: Prefers average to moist, well-drained soil, but is quite adaptable to dry conditions once established.

  • Problems: Generally pest-free but can experience rust in high-humidity climates.
