The North Star cherry tree is a cold-hardy, naturally dwarf (6–10 feet) tart cherry cultivar, perfect for small landscapes and zones 4-8, producing, large, bright red, sour cherries in late June. Introduced by the University of Minnesota in 1950, it is self-pollinating, disease-resistant, and thrives in full sun with well-drained soil.

  • Size: Compact, growing to 8–10 feet high and wide.
  • Pollination: Self-fertile; no other tree needed.
  • Hardiness: Excellent cold hardiness (USDA Zones 4-8).
  • Harvest: Late June.
  • Site Needs: Requires full sun (6-8+ hours) and well-drained soil; intolerant of standing water.
  • Maintenance: Low maintenance, but requires pruning in late winter/early spring to maintain shape.

Pros and Cons

  • Pros: Compact size allows for easy harvesting and netting (for birds). Highly productive, often bearing fruit in its first year. Resistant to brown rot.
  • Cons: Susceptible to common cherry pests like aphids and fruit flies, as well as diseases like leaf spot and black knot.
