#1.5 Gallon

The Northland Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum 'Northland') is an exceptionally cold-hardy, early-season, half-high hybrid (3–4 ft) known for high yields (15-20+ lbs) of medium-sized, sweet-tart fruit. Developed by Michigan State University, it thrives in zones 3-7, tolerates heavy snow with flexible branches, and prefers full sun and acidic soil (pH 4.5-5.5).

Key Characteristics & Benefits

  • Cold Hardiness: Extremely hardy, capable of surviving temperatures down to -30∘F.
  • Fruit Profile: Medium-sized berries with a "wild" blueberry flavor, ideal for baking, jams, and eating fresh.
  • Yield & Ripening: Produces heavy, reliable crops early in the season (July).
  • Growth Habit: A vigorous spreader that forms a 3-4 ft tall and wide bush.
  • Ornamental Value: Features white flowers in spring, green foliage that turns yellow/red/purple in fall, and attractive reddish stems in winter.

Growing & Maintenance Tips

  • Planting: Plant in full sun (at least 6-8 hours) in well-drained, acidic soil.
  • Pollination: While self-fertile, planting with other varieties (like Bluejay or Blueray) increases berry size and yield.
  • Watering: Requires regular, deep watering to establish a strong root system.
  • Pruning: Prune in late winter to remove dead wood and encourage new growth.
  • Fertilizing: Use a fertilizer formulated for acid-loving plants in early spring.
