#1 Gallon

Nepeta, commonly known as catmint, is a genus of tough, aromatic, and low-maintenance herbaceous perennials from the mint family (Lamiaceae), prized for their long-blooming purple-blue, pink, or white flower spikes from summer to fall. These drought-tolerant plants thrive in full sun and well-drained soil, making them ideal for borders, containers, and, because they are rarely eaten by deer or rabbits, for pest-resistant landscaping.

Key Characteristics and Care

  • Appearance: Forms dense, mounded, or sprawling clumps of grey-green, fragrant foliage that typically range from 9 inches to 3 feet in height.
  • Bloom Cycle: Flowers from early summer through fall; shearing or cutting back the plant by roughly half after the first bloom encourages a strong second flush of flowers.
  • Soil & Light: Prefers full sun for maximum bloom and aroma but tolerates light shade. They adapt to many soil types, including poor soil, but require good drainage.
  • Maintenance: Very low maintenance; drought-tolerant once established.
  • Uses: Excellent for pollinator gardens (attracts bees/butterflies), edging, and, for some varieties, to attract cats.
