MoonShadow™ Hardy Hibiscus is a compact, herbaceous perennial known for its striking, near-black foliage and large, raspberry-red or blush pink saucer-shaped flowers that bloom from summer to fall. It is a fast-growing, low-maintenance plant that reaches 3–4 feet in height and width, thriving in full sun and wet-to-moist soils. It is known for its improved resistance to Japanese beetles and early blooming capabilities.

  • Foliage: Distinctive dark, purple-black, maple-shaped leaves.

Care and Maintenance

  • Light: Full sun is best (6+ hours).
  • Water: Prefers consistently moist soil; can handle very wet areas.
  • Soil: Rich, well-drained soil.
  • Maintenance: Low maintenance, but can be cut back in late winter to early spring.
  • Pest Resistance: Improved tolerance to Japanese beetles and sawfly larvae. 

    Landscape Uses

  • Ideal for borders, containers, and as a dramatic, colorful focal point.
  • Attracts butterflies and hummingbirds.
  • Suitable for wet, boggy areas. 

     

Special Notes

  • This cultivar emerges from dormancy 2–3 weeks earlier than other M. moscheutosvarieties.
  • It is a deciduous perennial that dies back to the ground in winter and returns in spring.
