Mary Washington is a classic heirloom asparagus variety that has remained a favorite in the United States since its introduction in 1919. Originally bred by Dr. J.B. Norton to combat a devastating rust disease, it is celebrated for its vigor, reliability, and traditional nutty flavor.

  • Appearance: Produces long, straight, deep green spears with tight, uniform tips that often have a purple tint.
  • Growth Habit: A long-lived perennial that can produce for 15 to 30 years once established.
  • Flavor: Known for a rich, sweet, and slightly nutty taste, making it ideal for steaming, roasting, and grilling.
  • Resilience: High resistance to asparagus rust and good tolerance for both heat and cold (USDA hardiness zones 3–8)
