#7 Gallon

The London plane tree (Platanus x acerifolia), a widely planted, fast-growing hybrid (American sycamore x Oriental planetree) developed in the 1600s, is iconic for its pollution tolerance and exfoliating bark. Reaching 70–100 feet in height, it features mottled, camouflage-patterned bark (cream, olive, brown) and large 3–5 lobed leaves, making it a popular, durable, and long-lived urban shade tree.

Key Characteristics & Identification

  • Bark: Exfoliates in irregular patches to reveal a green/cream inner bark, creating a distinct camouflage effect.
  • Leaves: Deciduous, 3- to 5-lobed, maple-like, and 3-5 inches long, often with 3-5 deep, sharp lobes.
  • Fruit: Distinctive fuzzy, spherical seed balls, roughly 1 inch in diameter, often hang in pairs on a stem.
  • Shape: Initially pyramidal, becoming a large, spreading, open canopy with age.
  • Size: Height 70–100 feet, Width 60–80 feet.

Urban Adaptability & Usage

  • Pollution Resistance: Renowned for surviving urban grime, smoke, and compacted soil.
  • Uses: Ideal as a street tree, for large parks, and in urban settings.
  • Growth Rate: Fast-growing.

Growing Conditions

  • Zones: USDA Hardiness Zones 5–8.
  • Light: Full sun to partial shade.
  • Soil: Highly adaptable, but prefers moist, well-drained, fertile soil.
  • Maintenance: Low-maintenance, though it can be messy, shedding bark and leaves.
  • Disease: Generally robust, but susceptible to Sycamore Anthracnose.

The London plane tree is a staple in cities worldwide, valued for its durability, striking appearance, and ability to thrive in harsh, human-made environments.
