Shasta daisies (Leucanthemum×superbum) are popular, low-maintenance herbaceous perennials featuring classic white petals and yellow centers that bloom from early summer to fall. Hardy in USDA Zones 5-9, they thrive in full sun (6+ hours) and well-drained soil. These sturdy, drought-tolerant plants (2-4 ft tall) are ideal for borders, cutting gardens, and attracting pollinators, generally acting as short-lived perennials.

Key Characteristics & Care

  • Perennial Nature: While they are perennials, they are considered short-lived and may need to be replaced or divided every few years.
  • Sun Requirements: They require full sun to thrive but can tolerate light, partial shade. More sun equals more blooms.
  • Soil & Water: Well-drained soil is essential to prevent root rot. Once established, they are drought-tolerant.
  • Maintenance: Regular deadheading (removing spent blooms) encourages reblooming throughout the summer.
  • Hardiness: They are generally hardy in USDA Zones 5-9.
  • Pests & Diseases: They are usually resistant to deer and rabbits but can be susceptible to aphids, spider mites, and verticillium wilt.

Landscape Use
Shasta daisies are excellent for cottage gardens, sunny borders, and mass planting to create, as noted in this article from Wasco Nursery, "cheerful masses along borders or in flower beds". They pair well with other perennials like daylilies, salvia, and Russian sage.
