Lavandula (lavender) is a genus of 47+ species of aromatic, sun-loving perennial shrubs in the mint family (Lamiaceae), renowned for their fragrant purple flowers, silvery foliage, and, in L. angustifolia, high-quality essential oil. Native to the Mediterranean, they require full sun, well-drained soil, and minimal water. They are used for ornamental hedging, aromatherapy, and medicinal purposes.

Key Characteristics & Varieties

  • Appearance: Woody, bushy shrubs with gray-green leaves and flower spikes.
  • Common Species: Lavandula angustifolia (English Lavender) is hardy and most fragrant, while Lavandula x intermedia (Lavandin) is larger and more robust.
  • Hardiness: Generally hardy to USDA Zone 5, though some prefer warmer climates.

How to Care for Lavender

  • Light: Full sun (at least 6 hours) is essential.
  • Soil: Requires well-drained, sandy, or gritty soil.
  • Water: Drought-tolerant once established; avoid "wet feet" as they are prone to root rot.
  • Pruning: Prune after flowering to maintain shape, and again in early spring to encourage new growth.

Benefits of Lavender Essential Oil & Plant

  • Aromatherapy: Widely used to reduce stress, anxiety, and promote relaxation.
  • Medicinal: Possesses antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties.
  • Garden/Home: Attracts pollinators like bees and butterflies, acts as a deer-resistant plant, and is used for dried floral arrangements.

Common Uses

  • Culinary: Used in teas, baking, and herb mixes.
  • Cosmetic: Perfumes, soaps, and lotions.
  • Landscaping: Ideal for borders, rock gardens, and pathways
