The Kwanzan cherry (Prunus serrulata 'Kanzan') is a deciduous, ornamental tree famous for its dramatic, deep pink, double-petaled blooms in early spring. Growing 15–25 feet tall and wide, it features an upright, vase-shaped form that matures into a rounded crown. Ideal for, it thrives in full sun and zones 5–9. 

Key Characteristics

  • Blooms: Intense double pink, carnation-like flowers appear in April in clusters of 3–5.
  • Foliage: Leaves emerge bronzy-red, turn green in summer, and shift to yellow/orange in autumn.
  • Fruit: This is a sterile cultivar, meaning it produces little to no fruit, making it ideal for clean landscapes.
  • Bark: Smooth, reddish-copper bark with horizontal lenticels. 

Growing Conditions & Care

  • Light: Full sun (at least 6 hours direct) is required for best growth and flowering.
  • Soil: Prefers moist, well-drained loamy, sandy, or clay soils; tolerant of varied pH.
  • Growth Rate: Medium, growing up to 25 feet, though they have a relatively short lifespan of 15–25 years.
  • Uses: Popular as a specimen plant, street tree, or in small gardens due to its compact size. 

Problems

  • Diseases/Pests: Susceptible to aphids, scale, borers, leaf spot, and fireblight.
  • Maintenance: Generally low-maintenance, but benefits from pruning after flowering.
