Korean Boxwood (*Buxus sinica insularis/*Buxus microphylla var. koreana) is a hardy, broadleaf evergreen shrub known for its cold tolerance (to USDA Zone 4), fine-textured foliage, and adaptable growth, making it great for hedges, borders, and containers, though some varieties bronze in winter, with cultivars like 'Wintergreen' offering better color retention and pest resistance.

Key Characteristics:

  • Foliage: Fine, rounded, medium-green leaves that can turn bronze in winter, though 'Wintergreen' resists this.
  • Growth Habit: Slow-growing, dense, multi-stemmed, often with a slightly looser, more open form than common boxwood.
  • Size: Varies, but typically grows to about 3-4 feet tall and wide, though some can reach 7 feet.
  • Hardiness: One of the most cold-hardy boxwoods, thriving in USDA Zones 4-9.
  • Flowers: Small, fragrant, cream-colored flowers in spring attract pollinators.

Uses in the Landscape:

  • Versatile: Excellent for formal hedges, mass plantings, foundation plantings, rock gardens, and containers.
  • Topiary: Responds well to pruning for shaping.
  • Wildlife: Attracts bees and is generally deer-resistant.
