Kniphofia (Red Hot Poker) is a hardy, clump-forming, mostly evergreen perennial (Zones 5-9) known for its vibrant, rocket-shaped orange, red, and yellow flower spikes in summer. Growing 1.5–6 feet tall, these drought-tolerant, deer-resistant plants thrive in full sun and well-drained soil, making them perfect for borders, xeric, or, coastal gardens.

Key Care and Characteristics:

  • Sunlight: Requires full sun (6+ hours) for best flowering, though light shade is tolerated in very hot climates.
  • Soil/Water: Prefers well-drained, fertile soil; established plants are drought-tolerant but need consistent moisture when blooming.
  • Maintenance: Deadhead spent spikes to encourage re-blooming. In winter, tie leaves together to protect the crown from moisture.
  • Uses: Excellent for adding vertical, structural interest to gardens, cutting gardens, and attracting hummingbirds.
  • Propagation: Divide clumps in spring every 3–5 years.

Popular Varieties:

  • 'Uvaria' (Red Hot Poker): Classic two-toned red and yellow.
  • 'Thomsonii': Known for its orange flowers.
  • 'Fire Dance': A popular, compact variety
