#3 Gallon

The Kansas Peony (Paeonia 'Kansas') is a highly regarded, award-winning, early-to-midseason herbaceous perennial known for its large, fragrant, double carmine-red blooms. Growing 3 feet tall, this vigorous, cold-hardy (Zones 3-8) plant is a long-lived addition to borders or as a cut flower.

Key Characteristics and Care:

  • Blooms: Intense, magenta-red to watermelon-red, fully double, and rose-shaped flowers (5–7 inches) that do not fade in the sun.
  • Stems/Foliage: Exceptionally strong, erect stems that support heavy blooms without staking, with dark green foliage that lasts throughout the season.
  • Sun/Soil: Requires full sun (at least 6-8 hours) and well-drained, fertile soil.
  • Planting: Plant the "eyes" (buds) 1½ to 2 inches below the soil surface in fall for best results.
  • Maintenance: Low-maintenance and deer-resistant. Cut back foliage in late fall.
  • Uses: Excellent for cutting, in perennial borders, or as a focal hedge.

The Kansas Peony has been a favorite since its 1940 introduction, often cited for its brilliant color and strong, reliable growth, rarely requiring support.
