The Jonathan apple tree is a, productive heirloom cultivar known for producing medium-sized, bright red, sweet-tart fruit with crisp, juicy flesh. Ideal for fresh eating, baking, and storing for 3–6 months, it thrives in USDA zones 4–8. It is a self-fertile but often improved by a partner, such as Golden Delicious.

Key Characteristics & Growing Requirements:

  • Size: Varies by rootstock, with standard trees 15-25 ft, semi-dwarf 12-15 ft, and dwarf 8-10 ft.
  • Harvest & Bloom: Produces fragrant white/pink flowers in mid-spring, with fruit maturing in early-to-mid fall.
  • Hardiness & Maintenance: Requires full sun, well-drained soil, and regular watering.
  • Pollination: While sometimes considered self-fertile, it produces better crops when pollinated by varieties like Golden Delicious, Red Delicious, or Granny Smith.
  • Disease Susceptibility: The tree is highly susceptible to fire blight and cedar apple rust, requiring attentive care and potentially fungicide treatments.
  • Uses: Exceptional for fresh eating, pies, sauce, and freezing due to its "sprightly," balanced flavor.

Originating in the early 1800s in New York, the Jonathan is a reliable, precocious (bears fruit young) choice for home orchards, often bearing fruit in 3-6 years depending on the rootstock size.
