#1.5 Gallon

'Jersey' is a widely grown, heirloom Northern Highbush blueberry (introduced 1928) known for high yields of very sweet, medium-sized blue berries in late season. The 5–7 ft. shrubs are hardy (Zones 5–10), adaptable to various soils, and feature attractive orange/red fall foliage. They are self-fertile but benefit from cross-pollination.

Key Characteristics and Care

  • Harvest Time: Late season (late July to August).
  • Flavor/Usage: Very sweet, ideal for baking, pies, and fresh eating.
  • Size: 4–6 feet (up to 7-8 ft) tall and wide, vigorous, upright grower.
  • Soil/Sun: Prefers full sun and acidic soil (pH 4.5–5.5).
  • Hardiness: Zones 5–10.
  • Spacing: 4–6 feet apart.
  • Maintenance: Requires regular, consistent watering, especially during fruit development.

Planting and Maintenance Tips

  • Pollination: Self-fertile, but planting with other varieties like 'Elliott' or 'Darrow' can increase yields.
  • Pruning: Prune annually in late winter to remove dead or weak branches, promoting airflow.
  • Fertilizing: Use a balanced, acid-loving fertilizer in early spring and again after harvest.
  • Disease/Pest Resistance: Generally hardy, but can be susceptible to mummy berry, stem blight, and fruit worms
