Java Red Weigela (Weigela florida 'Java Red') is a compact, deciduous shrub prized for its intense red buds that open into pinkish-red flowers in late spring and its deep maroon-tinted foliage that lasts through summer. Ideal for borders and foundations in zones 4-8, it grows roughly 3–6 feet tall and wide with a mounded, fountain-like habit.

Key Features & Care:

  • Flowers & Foliage: Red buds open to rosy-pink, trumpet-shaped blooms that attract hummingbirds and bees. The foliage is reddish-green to maroon.
  • Light & Soil: Thrives in full sun for best flowering and color; prefers well-drained, average moisture soil.
  • Size: Compact, reaching roughly 3-4 feet high by 4-6 feet wide.
  • Maintenance: Low maintenance, requires little pruning, but should be pruned after flowering if needed.
  • Hardiness: Cold-hardy (Zone 4) and generally deer-resistant.
  • Uses: Excellent for shrub borders, foundations, mass planting, or containers.

This shrub offers a strong, dark color contrast in the landscape and is known for its high vigor and, sometimes, repeat blooming in late summer.
