#2 Gallon

The Japanese painted fern (Athyrium niponicum 'Pictum') is a striking, low-maintenance herbaceous perennial grown for its colorful, metallic fronds. Featuring silvery-grey, green, and deep purple-red hues, it thrives in partial to full shade, reaching roughly 12--24 inches tall and wide. It is highly valued for brightening shady spots, providing excellent color contrast in woodland gardens.

Key Characteristics & Care:

  • Light: Prefers partial to full shade. Too much sun washes out its silver-purple color.
  • Soil: Requires consistently moist, well-draining, and nutrient-rich soil.
  • Hardiness Zones: Hardy in zones 3-8
  • Color & Texture: Features arching, triangular, silvery-white fronds with contrasting reddish-burgundy stems.
  • Maintenance: Low-maintenance. It is deer-resistant, though it may occasionally face issues with slugs or snails.
  • Uses: Ideal for shaded borders, woodland gardens, container planting, and mass plantings for groundcover.
