The Heritage® River Birch (Betula nigra 'Cully') is a fast-growing, deciduous ornamental tree known for its striking, exfoliating bark that peels to reveal creamy-white, salmon, and tan layers. It typically grows 40–70 feet tall and 30–50 feet wide, often featuring a multi-stemmed, pyramidal, or rounded habit. 

Key Characteristics and Benefits

  • Uses: Ideal for privacy screens, shade, erosion control, or as a focal specimen in landscaping. 
  • Appearance: Features large, glossy green leaves that turn brilliant yellow in the fall. The exfoliating bark provides exceptional winter interest.
  • Growth Rate: Rapidly grows 2–3 feet per year.
  • Hardiness & Adaptability:

     Hardy in USDA zones 4-9, it is highly heat-tolerant and thrives in wet, low-lying, or compacted soils

    . It is also more resistant to the bronze birch borer than other birch species

Care and Maintenance

  • Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade.
  • Water: Thrives in moist, acidic, or sandy soil; can tolerate temporary flooding or mild drought once established.
  • Planting: When planting, ensure the hole is 1.5 times wider than the root ball. 

Commonly sold as a multi-trunk tree, the Heritage Birch is often used in groups to maximize its visual impact.
