'Halcyon' Hosta is a highly popular, award-winning, medium-sized perennial (14–24 inches tall, 3 feet wide) known for its thick, heavily ribbed, heart-shaped, blue-grey foliage. It is ideal for shade to part-shade areas, with dense, slug-resistant leaves that hold their color well. In mid-summer, it produces pale, lavender-blue flowers on 26-28 inch scapes.

Key Features & Care

  • Size: Forms a slow-growing mound about 14-24 inches in height and up to 3 feet in width.
  • Light: Prefers partial shade, dappled shade, or full shade. Too much sun can cause the blue color to fade to green.
  • Soil: Thrives in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic, humus-rich soil.
  • Bloom Time: Mid to late summer.
  • Growth Rate: Slow to moderate, but worth the wait for a dense, mature clump.
  • Slug Resistance: Due to its thick leaves, 'Halcyon' is generally more resistant to slugs and snails than thinner-leaved hostas.
  • Maintenance: Low maintenance; simply remove old foliage in late fall to reduce pest issues.
  • Usage: Excellent for shade borders, containers, and underplanting shrubs.

Planting Tips

  • Spacing: Space plants approximately 30 inches apart.
  • Site: Ensure the spot has enough shade to maintain the blue-green color throughout the season.
  • Watering: While drought-tolerant once established, it prefers consistent moisture.
