Hakonechloa macra 'All Gold' is a slow-growing, perennial ornamental grass (Zones 5-9) featuring bright yellow, cascading, bamboo-like foliage that brightens shady, moist spots. Reaching 12-18 inches tall and wide, it creates a "whoosh" effect, making it ideal for borders, containers, and, as noted on the Monrovia website, as a shade-loving groundcover.

Key Care and Characteristics:

  • Light: Thrives in part shade to full shade. The foliage turns more chartreuse in deeper shade and is brightest in partial sun.
  • Soil/Water: Prefers moist, well-drained, nutrient-rich soil.
  • Growth Rate: Slow to moderate, with a mounding, trailing habit.
  • Maintenance: Low-maintenance; prune back old foliage to the ground in late winter or early spring.
  • Attributes: Deer and rabbit resistant, withstanding air pollution, as noted on the Almanac Planting Co website.
  • Seasonal Color: Foliage may develop pink-tinged, red-brown tips in autumn.
