Gracillimus maiden grass (Miscanthus sinensis 'Gracillimus') is a popular, low-maintenance, clump-forming ornamental grass, known for its fine-textured, narrow green foliage with a silver midrib. It forms 4–7 ft tall, upright-arching, fountain-like clumps that turn golden in fall, with coppery plumes appearing in late summer, lasting into winter.

  • Size: Typically 4–7 feet tall and 3–6 feet wide.
  • Growth Rate: Moderate to fast.
  • Foliage: Narrow, green leaves with a distinct silvery midrib.
  • Flowers: Copper-colored, tassel-like plumes appear in late August/September, turning silvery-white in fall.
  • Winter Interest: Foliage dries to a straw-beige color, remaining standing throughout winter. 

Planting and Care

  • Light: Full sun to partial shade; best flowering occurs in full sun.
  • Soil: Adaptable to various soil types, including clay, but prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil.
  • Water: Medium water needs, but displays good drought tolerance once established.
  • Spacing: Plant 3–6 feet apart to allow for proper air circulation.
  • Maintenance: Cut back to 6 inches in early spring to make way for new growth.
  • Zones: USDA Hardiness Zones 5–9.
