#1 Gallon

Gaillardia (Blanketflower) is a hardy, drought-tolerant, sun-loving perennial (1–3 ft. tall) known for its vibrant red, orange, and yellow daisy-like blooms from spring to fall. Ideal for xeriscaping, these heat-resistant plants thrive in poor, well-drained soil, attract pollinators, and resist deer. They are perfect for borders or containers, requiring little maintenance beyond deadheading.

Key Care & Growing Conditions

  • Light: Full sun (at least 6-8 hours daily).
  • Water: Low; only need water during extended droughts once established. Overwatering can cause root rot.
  • Soil: Well-drained, sandy, or poor soil is preferred.
  • Hardiness: Generally hardy, but often short-lived perennials (2–3 years).
  • Maintenance: Deadhead regularly to promote continuous blooming.
  • Spacing: 12 inches apart.

Key Characteristics

  • Varieties: Includes Gaillardia x grandiflora (hybrid) and Gaillardia pulchella(annual/tender perennial).
  • Usage: Excellent for sunny borders, rock gardens, and cut flowers.
  • Wildlife: Attracts butterflies, bees, and birds.
  • Problems: Susceptible to powdery mildew and leaf spot if too wet.
