#2 Gallon

Silene 'Forged by Fire' is a compact, drought-tolerant perennial (12–18" tall) with intense, scarlet-red, notched flowers and dark green foliage. A mutation of Silene virginica 'Jackson Valentine', it offers improved, more abundant blooming and sturdier stems, making it ideal for rock gardens, borders, and attracting hummingbirds.

Key Characteristics and Care

  • Bloom Time: Mid-spring.
  • Light: Prefers part shade/afternoon shade, though tolerant of full sun.
  • Soil: Requires well-drained, dry, or rocky soil.
  • Maintenance: Low maintenance; deadheading can promote better, longer bloom.
  • Features: Sticky, hairy stems (a "catchfly") that can trap small insects.
  • Growth Habit: Clump-forming, upright-to-weak stems.

This cultivar is a superior selection for early-season color and thrives in USDA Zones 4-8. It is relatively short-lived but often self-sows.
