'First Frost' hosta is an award-winning (2010 Hosta of the Year), medium-sized perennial renowned for its thick, slug-resistant blue-green leaves with creamy-yellow margins that turn white by summer. It thrives in shade, is hardy in zones 3–9, and maintains its striking foliage color until the first frost.

Key Characteristics and Care:

  • Appearance: Features heart-shaped leaves forming a mound 16–18 inches tall and up to 24–36 inches wide. Leaves emerge blue-green with a gold edge, turning white later in the season.
  • Flowers: Produces light lavender flowers on 28-inch scapes in mid-summer.
  • Light & Soil: Prefers part shade to full shade. Morning sun improves color, but harsh afternoon sun should be avoided. Thrives in moist, well-drained, organic soils.
  • Maintenance: Low maintenance; slug-resistant, though it may require monitoring.
  • Uses: Ideal for borders, containers, under trees, and as a groundcover to suppress weeds.

Planting 'First Frost' Hosta:

  • When: Plant in spring or early fall to allow roots to establish.
  • How: Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and just deep enough so the top of the crown is level with the soil surface.
  • Spacing: Space plants 18–24 inches apart.
  • Tips: Mulch heavily to retain moisture and manage weeds.
