#7 Gallon

The Everbearing Mulberry (often Morus nigra or hybrid Morus alba x rubra, such as 'Illinois Everbearing') is a fast-growing, highly productive, and versatile fruit tree, often reaching 15–30 feet in height. It is known for producing sweet, dark, blackberry-like fruit continuously from late spring through summer, thriving in zones 5–10 with 200–500 chill hours.

Key Characteristics & Care

  • Fruit Production: Unlike trees that ripen all at once, everbearing types ripen over an extended period (June to August/September), providing a steady supply.
  • Harvesting: Fruit is ripe when dark black and sweet, often falling with a gentle shake of the branch.
  • Growth & Size: Fast growth rate (3–5 ft per year). They are typically self-pollinating, making them ideal for single-tree planting.
  • Adaptability: Hardy to -20°F (Zones 3–8) for Illinois types, while others prefer Zones 6–10. They are drought-resistant, pollution-tolerant, and adaptable to various soil types once established.
  • Size Control: While they can become large, they are easily pruned to maintain a smaller, shrub-like form or a 15-foot backyard tree.

Uses & Benefits

  • Uses: Excellent for fresh eating, baking (pies), jams, and jellies.
  • Wildlife: Highly attractive to birds, deer, and game.
  • Landscaping: Useful as a shade tree, privacy screen, or in edible landscapes.
