Hosta sieboldiana 'Elegans' is a premier, large, shade-loving perennial known for its massive, thick, corrugated blue-gray, heart-shaped leaves and tall white flowers. It forms a dense, 3-foot tall and 4-foot wide mound that is excellent at crowding out weeds and resisting slugs. Thriving in partial to full shade, this low-maintenance plant adds dramatic texture to gardens in zones 3–9.

Key Characteristics and Care

  • Foliage: Intense blue-grey, heart-shaped, and deeply corrugated leaves that provide a bold, textured look in the garden. The blue color is best achieved in lighter shade or dappled sun.
  • Flowers: Pale lilac to white, bell-shaped flowers bloom on 30–40 inch scapes in early to mid-summer.
  • Size: A large, slow-growing, mounding variety, reaching approximately 26-30 inches in height and 3-4 feet in width.
  • Light: Prefers partial to full shade.
  • Water: Prefers moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil, though it is quite tolerant of dry shade once established.
  • Maintenance: Low maintenance, with minimal pests (slug-resistant), requiring only spring clean-up.
