Daylilies (Hemerocallis) are tough, low-maintenance herbaceous perennials known for their showy, trumpet-shaped blooms that last for only one day. They thrive in full sun, are drought-tolerant, and feature long, grass-like foliage. With over 40,000 cultivars, they offer a vast array of colors (except blue), shapes, and bloom times. 

 

Key Characteristics and Facts

  • Appearance: They form clumps of arching, sword-shaped leaves with flowers on tall, leafless stems.
  • Lifespan: Individual flowers last one day, but each plant produces numerous buds over several weeks.
  • Varieties: Ranging from 1 to 4 feet tall, they come in early, mid, and late-season bloomers.
  • "Perfect Perennial": Due to their resilience, adaptability to soil types, and resistance to most pests (except deer), they are often called the perfect perennial.
  • Origins: Native to Asia and central Europe.

  • Flowers: Funnel-shaped with six segments (three petals and three sepals) joined at the base.
  • Roots: Thickened, fleshy roots that store nutrients and water.
  • Foliage: Long, narrow, grass-like leaves.

  • Planting: Plant with crowns about 1 inch below the soil surface.
  • Maintenance: Generally low-maintenance; divide plants in spring or fall to maintain vigor.
