The Dappled Willow (Salix integra 'Hakuro-Nishiki') is a popular, fast-growing deciduous shrub or small grafted tree, prized for its tri-colored foliage (pink, white, and green) and bright red winter stems. It typically reaches 6–10 feet in height, thrives in full sun to partial shade, and prefers moist, well-drained soil.

Key Features and Care:

  • Foliage: New leaves emerge soft pink in spring, fading to a creamy white and light green mix in summer.
  • Form: Available as a multi-stemmed shrub or a small tree form with a rounded, airy, or slightly weeping canopy.
  • Maintenance: Highly tolerant of hard pruning, which is recommended in late winter or early spring to promote intense pink new growth and maintain a compact shape.
  • Environment: Hardy in USDA Zones 4–9, adaptable to various soils, and water-loving, making it suitable for rain gardens.
  • Uses: Excellent as a specimen, in hedges, or to add color to borders.

For the best color, plant in full sun, though afternoon shade is appreciated in hot climates.
