#3 Gallon

Karl Foerster feather reed grass (Calamagrostis x acutiflora 'Karl Foerster') is a popular, award-winning ornamental grass known for its striking vertical form and ease of care. It is a cool-season, clump-forming grass that stays upright throughout the year, making it a "soldier" in garden borders.

  • Mature Size: Typically grows 3 to 5 feet tall (sometimes reaching 6 feet when in bloom) with a narrow spread of 1.5 to 3 feet.
  • Foliage: Features deep green blades that emerge early in spring, as it is one of the first grasses to come out of dormancy.
  • Blooms: Feathery plumes emerge in late spring to early summer, starting with a reddish-pink or purple-pink hue.
  • Seasonal Color: The seed heads transition to a warm golden-buff or tan color by late summer and persist through winter, providing year-round interest.

Growing Conditions

  • Hardiness Zones: Thrives in USDA Zones 4 through 9.
  • Sun Requirements: Best in full sun (at least 6 hours of direct light daily) for the strongest upright growth. While it tolerates partial shade, too much shade can cause the stems to "flop" or lean.
  • Soil and Water: Highly adaptable to various soil types, including heavy clay, and can handle both wet and moderately dry conditions. It prefers consistently moist, well-drained soil during its first year of establishment.
