#3 Gallon

'Hot Rod' Switch Grass (Panicum virgatum 'Hot Rod') is a compact, upright ornamental perennial (USDA zones 4-9) prized for its dramatic color change, transitioning from blue-green foliage to deep burgundy-maroon early in summer. Growing 4 feet tall and 3 feet wide, it offers late-season purple panicles, winter interest, and drought tolerance.

Key Features and Care:

  • Color & Form: Features a strong vertical, clumping habit, turning deep red/maroon earlier than other varieties.
  • Light & Soil: Requires full sun for best color and to prevent flopping; thrives in average to dry soils, including clay and alkaline types.
  • Maintenance: Low maintenance. Cut back to the ground in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.
  • Landscape Use: Ideal for mass planting, vertical accents, erosion control, and, due to its durability, urban gardens or xeriscaping.
  • Wildlife Value: Provides habitat and food for birds during winter.

'Hot Rod' is highly adaptable, though it prefers to stay in one place once established.
