#1 Gallon

Allium 'Chivette' is a compact, clump-forming, and largely sterile perennial chive (12–15" tall) featuring Kelly-green edible foliage and lavender-purple flowers with a distinct dark midrib. Introduced by Intrinsic Perennial Gardens, it is hardy in zones 4-8, drought-tolerant, and ideal for sunny borders, rock gardens, or containers.

Key Characteristics and Care:

  • Appearance: Upright, dense blue-green foliage with 1–1.25 inch lavender-purple blooms appearing in late spring to early summer.
  • Sterility: Unlike common chives, Chivette is mostly sterile, meaning it does not self-seed heavily, keeping it tidy in the garden.
  • Usage: Both the leaves and flowers are edible, providing a mild onion flavor. It is also highly effective as an ornamental, pollinator-friendly, and resistant to deer and rabbits.
  • Cultivation: Thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained, average soil.
  • Maintenance: Low-maintenance, though it can be divided in spring or early fall.

Chivette is particularly useful for edging, herb gardens, and, due to its adaptability, even in green roof applications.
