The Catawba grape is a historic American hybrid (Vitis labrusca x vinifera) known for its deep red-purple color, sweet/tart flavor, and distinctive musky, "foxy" aroma. A staple in 19th-century US wine production, it remains popular for fresh eating, jellies, juices, and sweet,, sparkling, or rosé wines. The vines are hardy, fast-growing, and well-suited for trellis systems in zones 5-8. 

 

Key Characteristics & Details:

  • Flavor/Usage: Very sweet and juicy, often used in jams, jellies, and wines with notes of strawberries, pineapple, and peach.
  • Wine Profile: Produces medium-bodied, aromatic, and off-dry, pink/red wines.
  • Cultivation: Vigorous, late-ripening vines (September–October) that prefer full sun and well-drained, acidic soil (pH 5.0–6.5).
  • History: Popularized in the 1820s; was the most widely planted grape in the US before the Civil War and prohibition.
  • Hardiness: Zones 5-8. 

     

Cultivation Tips:

  • Planting: Spaced 6–8 feet apart in full sun.
  • Pruning: Requires heavy, annual dormant pruning (up to 70–90% of the wood) to maintain productivity.
  • Soil: Thrives in deep,, fertile, loamy soil.
