'Burgundy Glow' Ajuga (Ajuga reptans) is a popular, low-maintenance, semi-evergreen groundcover known for its striking tri-colored foliage (creamy white, pink, and burgundy-red) and deep blue flower spikes in late spring. Growing 3-6 inches tall, this perennial forms a dense, weed-suppressing mat, making it ideal for shaded areas, erosion control, and edging in zones 4-9.

Key Features and Care:

  • Foliage: Tricolor, evergreen to semi-evergreen rosettes, often intensifying to deep bronze in winter.
  • Flowers: Short, upright spikes of deep blue/purple flowers, which appear in late spring to early summer and attract pollinators.
  • Sun/Shade: Thrives in partial shade to full shade, though it can tolerate full sun with consistent moisture.
  • Soil/Water: Prefers moist, well-drained soil, but is adaptable to various soil types once established.
  • Growth Habit: Spreads via stolons (runners) to form a dense, 2–3 foot wide mat.
  • Maintenance: Low-maintenance, typically requiring no pruning or deadheading.
  • Resistance: Deer and rabbit resistant.
  • Usage: Excellent for shade gardens, groundcover under trees, edging, rock gardens, and container planting.
