The Black Tartarian cherry tree (Prunus avium) is a popular, vigorous, and early-bearing heirloom cultivar prized for its large, heart-shaped, purplish-black fruit with a rich, sweet, and juicy flavor.
Typically growing 18–25 feet tall (or smaller in dwarf varieties), these trees are well-suited for home orchards in USDA Zones 4-8, offering high productivity and serving as an excellent pollinator for other sweet cherry varieties.

Key Characteristics and Requirements:

  • Fruit & Harvest: Produces dark red, tender flesh in late June to early July. Excellent for fresh eating, preserves, and baking.
  • Pollination: Not self-fertile; requires a cross-pollinator like Stella, Bing, Rainier, or Van.
  • Chill Hours: Requires approximately 700–900 hours, making it suitable for cold winter climates.
  • Growth & Care: Thrives in full sun with well-drained, fertile soil. It is a vigorous, upright grower that acts as a good shade tree.
  • Lifespan: Can live for 50 years or more.
