#1 Gallon
Ajuga reptans 'Black Scallop' is a low-maintenance, mat-forming evergreen perennial, growing 3-6 inches tall and spreading 12-24 inches with glossy, deep, chocolate-purple to near-black foliage. It is ideal as a groundcover, thriving in full sun to part shade (producing best color in sun) and produces short, 4-6 inch spikes of blue flowers in late spring.
Key Features and Care:
- Color & Foliage: Leaves are wavy, scalloped, and become darker with more sun and cooler temperatures.
- Hardiness & Growth: Hardy in zones 3-9, it grows at a medium rate to form a dense mat that helps suppress weeds.
- Light: While it tolerates full shade, it requires at least 3-4 hours of sun for the best dark foliage color.
- Water & Soil: Prefers well-drained, moist soil but is tolerant of occasional dry periods once established.
- Uses: Perfect for edging, in containers, as a ground cover in shady areas, and for erosion control on slopes.
- Maintenance: Generally low-maintenance and deer-resistant; it can be divided every 2-3 years to maintain health.
- Variety Note: This cultivar is more compact than other Ajugas and is noted for being resistant to powdery mildew.
