The Bing cherry tree (Prunus avium) is the premier, most popular sweet cherry cultivar in the U.S., cherished for producing large, firm, heart-shaped, deep mahogany-red fruits with a rich, sweet flavor. Ideally suited for USDA zones 5–9, these trees typically reach

16−20 feet, yield 50−100 lbs of fruit annually, and require a cross-pollinator like Black Tartarian or Rainier.

Key Characteristics and Requirements:

  • Fruit: Large, dark red to near-black, firm, and juicy, ripening in mid-June to July.
  • Growth & Size: Grows 16−20 feet tall and 12−15 feet wide, with a 5-6 year bearing period.
  • Pollination: Requires a compatible pollinator (e.g., Black Tartarian, Rainier, Stella, or Van).
  • Soil & Sun: Requires full sun and well-drained, fertile soil; susceptible to root rot in heavy, wet soil.
  • Uses: Primarily eaten fresh, but also excellent for canning, jams, and baking.

Cultivation Tips:

  • Spacing: Plant standard trees 18-25 feet apart, or 10-12 feet for dwarf varieties.
  • Pruning: Train to a central leader or open-center system, focusing on removing suckers and improving airflow.
  • Care: They are relatively slow feeders, so, for the most part, additional fertilizer is not necessary.

Originally developed in Oregon in the late 19th century, this cultivar is named after Ah Bing, a foreman at a Lewelling nursery.
