Baileyi Red Twig Dogwood (Cornus sericea 'Baileyi') is a hardy, fast-growing deciduous shrub (6-10 ft tall and wide) prized for its brilliant red winter stems. Unlike native red twigs, this cultivar does not spread by stolons. It features white spring flowers, creamy berries, and red-purple fall foliage. It thrives in full sun to part shade and moist to wet soils, ideal for erosion control and screening.

Key Characteristics and Growth:

  • Growth Rate: Fast-growing, often adding significant height each year.
  • Size: Typically reaches a mature size of 6–10 feet in height and width, forming a rounded, multi-stemmed, and upright shape.
  • Winter Interest: The brightest red stems occur on new, young growth, making it highly ornamental.
  • Foliage and Flowers: Dark green leaves turn reddish-purple in autumn. Small, white, flat-topped flower clusters bloom in late spring (May-June).
  • Fruit: Produces small, berry-like, white fruit that attracts birds, although they are not for human consumption.

Landscape Uses:

  • Erosion Control: Ideal for bank stabilization, wet areas, and stream buffers.
  • Hedges and Screening: Effective as a privacy screen, border, or hedge due to its thick growth.
  • Four-Season Appeal: Provides color year-round, including in winter against snow.

Care and Maintenance:

  • Sunlight: Prefers full sun to partial shade.
  • Soil: Tolerant of a wide range of soils, including clay and consistently moist or boggy conditions.
  • Pruning: To maintain the vibrant red stem color, it is recommended to prune 20–25% of the oldest, dullest stems to the ground in late winter or early spring.
  • Hardiness: Very hardy (USDA Zones 3–7).
